Dumbbell Step-up tutorial

The dumbbell step-up is a single-leg exercise where you step onto a box or bench while holding dumbbells. It strengthens the quads and glutes and helps correct strength imbalances between legs. Because it is functional and easy on the back, it suits beginners at home or in the gym.

How to perform

  1. Choose a box or bench at a height that puts your knee at about 90 degrees.
  2. Hold the dumbbells at your sides with straight arms.
  3. Place your whole foot on the box.
  4. Drive through the heel of the top foot to lift your body until you stand tall on the box.
  5. Bring the other foot up beside it or keep it hovering.
  6. Step back down with control, trailing leg first, and complete your reps.
Breathing: Exhale as you step up and inhale as you step down.

Key tips

  • Drive with the top leg and avoid pushing off the bottom foot.
  • Keep your torso upright and shoulders back.
  • Keep the working knee aligned with your toes.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing off with the bottom leg instead of the top leg
  • Using a box so high that the torso folds forward
  • Letting the knee cave inward on the way up
Safety: People with knee pain or balance problems should start with a low step and no dumbbells.
