Dumbbell Lunge tutorial
The dumbbell lunge is a unilateral exercise that strengthens the quads, glutes, and hamstrings while improving balance and coordination. Training each leg separately helps fix imbalances, and it suits beginners at home or in the gym.
How to perform
- Stand tall holding the dumbbells at your sides with arms straight.
- Take a long step forward with your right foot.
- Bend both knees and lower your body straight down until your back knee is close to the floor.
- Keep your front knee over your ankle and your torso upright.
- Push through your front heel to rise and step back to standing.
- Repeat with the left leg, alternating sides.
Breathing: Inhale as you lower and exhale as you push back up to standing.
Key tips
- Lower your body straight down, not forward.
- Keep your feet hip-width apart side to side, like walking on two rails.
- Brace your core so your body doesn't sway sideways.
Common mistakes
- Taking too short a step so the front knee shoots far past the toes.
- Letting the front knee cave inward.
- Leaning the torso forward and rounding the back.
Safety: People with balance issues or knee pain should start with bodyweight or reverse lunges (stepping back) while holding onto support.
