Band Chest Press tutorial

The band chest press is a simple, practical way to strengthen the chest, front delts, and triceps at home. The band's resistance increases toward the end of the movement while staying easy on the joints, making it ideal for beginners, older adults, and anyone without gym equipment.

How to perform

  1. Wrap the band around your upper back under your armpits, or anchor it behind you at chest height.
  2. Hold the handles by your chest, face away from the anchor, and stand in a slight staggered stance.
  3. Brace your core and keep your elbows about 45 degrees from your body.
  4. Press the handles straight forward until your arms are extended.
  5. Pause for a moment and squeeze your chest.
  6. Bring the handles back to your chest slowly and under control.
Breathing: Exhale as you press forward and inhale as you return.

Key tips

  • Increase resistance by stepping farther from the anchor or using a thicker band.
  • Keep your torso still and don't lean forward.
  • Don't let the band snap your hands back quickly.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning the body forward to help the press.
  • Shrugging the shoulders toward the ears.
  • Using a worn band or an insecure anchor that could slip.
Safety: Check the band for cracks or tears before each session; if your shoulders are sensitive, use a lighter band and shorter range.
