Decline Barbell Bench Press tutorial
The decline barbell bench press is performed on a negative-angle bench, targeting the lower chest with less shoulder stress. It helps complete lower-chest development and suits intermediate lifters who already press well on a flat bench.
How to perform
- Set the bench to a 15–30 degree decline and hook your feet under the pads.
- Lie back so your eyes are roughly under the bar.
- Grip slightly wider than shoulder-width and retract your shoulder blades.
- Unrack with a spotter and hold the bar over your lower chest.
- Lower the bar under control to your lower chest.
- Press straight up until your arms are straight, then rack it with the spotter's help.
Breathing: Inhale as you lower the bar and exhale as you press.
Key tips
- Always use a spotter because of the head-down position.
- Keep your elbows slightly tucked toward your body.
- Keep sets short and sit up between them to relieve head pressure.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing the bar off the chest.
- Lowering the bar toward the neck or upper chest.
- Not securing the feet and sliding on the bench.
Safety: People with high blood pressure or eye conditions should avoid head-down positions and use chest dips or high-to-low cable flyes instead.
