Barbell Shrug tutorial
The barbell shrug strengthens the upper trapezius by lifting the shoulders straight up toward the ears while holding a bar in front of the thighs. It supports neck and shoulder-blade stability and grip strength, and suits beginners through advanced lifters.
How to perform
- Take the bar from a rack at thigh height with an overhand, shoulder-width grip.
- Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and arms fully straight.
- Keep your chest open and gaze forward.
- Lift your shoulders straight up toward your ears.
- Pause for one to two seconds at the top and squeeze your traps.
- Lower your shoulders slowly until you feel a full stretch.
Breathing: Exhale as you shrug up and inhale as you lower.
Key tips
- Don't roll your shoulders; move straight up and down.
- Don't bend your elbows; your arms are just hooks.
- Use lifting straps for heavy sets.
Common mistakes
- Rolling the shoulders forward or back.
- Jutting the head and neck forward while shrugging.
- A very short range with excessive weight.
Safety: People with neck pain should start light with a controlled range or use dumbbell shrugs.
