Band Lat Pulldown tutorial

The band lat pulldown is a home alternative to the cable pulldown that strengthens the lats and upper back by pulling from overhead. It is a simple, low-risk choice for beginners and anyone working toward their first pull-up.

How to perform

  1. Anchor the band over the top of a door or to a high, secure point.
  2. Kneel or sit facing the anchor and hold the handles with arms extended overhead.
  3. Lift your chest and lean back slightly.
  4. Pull your shoulder blades down and drive your elbows toward your sides until the handles reach your chest.
  5. Pause briefly and squeeze your lats.
  6. Return your arms slowly overhead.
Breathing: Exhale as you pull down and inhale as your arms return overhead.

Key tips

  • Think of driving your elbows down toward your pockets.
  • Keep your shoulders away from your ears.
  • Keep your torso steady and don't use body weight to pull.

Common mistakes

  • Anchoring the band insecurely over the door.
  • Leaning far forward or back while pulling.
  • Letting the arms fly back up quickly.
Safety: Those with limited shoulder mobility should work only in a pain-free range or anchor the band slightly in front of the body.
