Band Curl tutorial

The band curl is a home alternative to the dumbbell curl that strengthens the biceps with resistance that increases toward the top of the movement. It is easy on the joints and suits beginners, older adults, and training at home or while traveling.

How to perform

  1. Stand on the middle of the band with feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold the handles with palms facing forward and arms straight at your sides.
  3. Fix your elbows at your sides and brace your core.
  4. Curl the handles up toward your shoulders.
  5. Squeeze your biceps at the top and pause briefly.
  6. Lower the handles slowly without letting the band pull your hands down quickly.
Breathing: Exhale as you curl the handles up and inhale as you lower them.

Key tips

  • For more resistance, widen your stance or use a thicker band.
  • Keep your elbows fixed so only your forearms move.
  • Make sure the band is secure under your feet and won't slip.

Common mistakes

  • Leaning back to swing the handles up.
  • Letting the elbows drift forward.
  • Letting the handles drop quickly.
Safety: Check the band before use, and if your elbows hurt, use a lighter band within a pain-free range.
