Barbell Step-up tutorial
The barbell step-up is a single-leg compound exercise that strengthens the quads and glutes by stepping onto a box and improves balance. Each leg works independently, helping correct imbalances between legs.
How to perform
- Rest the barbell on your upper back and stand facing a box or bench.
- Place one foot fully on the box so your knee is bent about 90 degrees.
- Keep your chest up and core braced.
- Drive through the foot on the box to lift your body until the leg is straight.
- Bring the other foot up gently beside it or hold it in the air without slamming.
- Step down under control, finish the reps on one leg, then switch.
Breathing: Exhale as you step up and inhale as you step down.
Key tips
- Choose a box that does not bend your knee past 90 degrees.
- Do most of the work with the leg on the box, not the trailing leg.
- Start light to learn the balance.
Common mistakes
- Pushing off with the back leg instead of the front.
- Letting the knee collapse inward.
- Leaning the torso too far forward.
Safety: If your balance is weak, practice first with no load or with dumbbells, and use a rack or spotter for safety.
