Decline Dumbbell Fly tutorial
The decline dumbbell fly is an isolation exercise that emphasizes the lower chest. Opening and closing the arms along a fixed arc gives the chest a strong stretch and contraction.
How to perform
- Lie on a decline bench and lock your feet securely under the pads.
- Hold the dumbbells above your chest, palms facing each other and elbows slightly bent.
- Open your arms in an arc until the dumbbells reach chest level and you feel a stretch.
- Keep the elbow angle fixed and your shoulders pulled back and down.
- Squeeze your chest to bring the dumbbells back up along the same arc.
- Pause briefly at the top and start the next rep without clanging the dumbbells.
Breathing: Inhale as you open your arms and exhale as you bring them together.
Key tips
- Choose a light weight so you stay fully in control.
- Think of squeezing the sides of your chest together rather than lifting the weights.
- Lower more slowly than you lift.
Common mistakes
- Lowering the dumbbells too far and straining the shoulders.
- Turning the fly into a press by bending and straightening the elbows.
- Using too heavy a weight and losing control.
Safety: If you have shoulder pain or instability, shorten the range of motion. Use a spotter to hand off heavier dumbbells.
