Band-Assisted Pull-up tutorial

The band-assisted pull-up uses a resistance band looped over the bar and under your foot or knee to offset part of your body weight at the bottom. It lets you practice the full pull-up pattern with a complete range while strengthening the lats and biceps. It is ideal for beginners who can't yet do a full pull-up.

How to perform

  1. Loop a resistance band around the pull-up bar and secure it.
  2. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width with palms facing forward.
  3. Place one knee or foot in the band loop and hang.
  4. Pull your shoulder blades down and drive your elbows toward your sides to lift your body.
  5. Pull until your chin clears the bar.
  6. Lower slowly until your arms are fully straight, and step out of the band carefully.
Breathing: Exhale as you pull up and inhale as you lower.

Key tips

  • Progress to thinner bands over time until you can do unassisted pull-ups.
  • Lower slowly so the band doesn't catapult you upward.
  • Lead with your chest toward the bar and keep your shoulder blades engaged.

Common mistakes

  • Relying on the band's bounce instead of pulling with the lats
  • Partial reps at the top or bottom
  • Setting the band poorly so it slips off the foot
Safety: People with shoulder or elbow problems should use a thicker band and a pain-free range, or use the lat pulldown instead.
